A Blue and White Wedding at Nasher Sculpture Center

The Nasher created a beautiful backdrop for Anna and Jackson’s fall wedding day! We focused on a simple and elegant look for their wedding invitations with a touch of florals in the liner pattern. We knew we wanted to create a monogram to use throughout their wedding day details and after trying a few options we landed on a clean, bold design for their initials.

Carrying the design throughout the day of paper items - we used their monogram, floral pattern, and colors from the invitation on the rest of their stationery items. Guests were first greeted with a welcome sign and ceremony programs with the same floral pattern as the envelope liner. After the ceremony, the A&J monogram was the focus on the seating chart, guiding guests to their seats. At each table, was an oval wedding menu with place card attachment. Let’s not forget the perfect bar details and monogram dance floor! Every moment throughout the day carried a cohesive look.

Congrats to Anna and Jackson on a gorgeous day!

Fall Wedding Inspiration

Take a peek at some of our favorite Fall weddings!

Emily + Vishal had a luxurious wedding full of beautiful fall colors. The invitation focused on a venue sketch of Dover Hall in Virginia. Deep jewel tones carried through the wedding day. Our favorite detail - passports doubled as escort cards! As a nod to the couples love of travel these passports were full of all of the fun places they have been together!

There is nothing better than New York in the Fall. It created the perfect backdrop for Karla and Max’s big day. We loved pulling in the fall tones to the stationery design!

A beautiful wedding at the family home for Madi + Grant! This Dallas wedding was full of lush florals, letterpress printing, neutral tones, and a perfect custom monogram to create a cohesive look across all pieces!

Teighlor and Lincoln went with a classic look and neutral color palette for their Fort Worth wedding. It was a beautiful fall day for an outdoor wedding!

Courtney + Kevin wanted a modern, artistic vibe for their wedding day! Full of colors, shapes, and simplistic details this Dallas wedding was perfect for Hickory Street Annex!

Envelope Addressing Etiquette

There are many different etiquette rules out there when it comes to properly addressing wedding invitation envelopes. We will list out some etiquette information here, but at the end of the day the most important thing to keep in mind is that this is your wedding day, and you get to decide what works for you and your guests!

The History of Double Envelopes

Back when wedding invitations were delivered by hand, double envelopes were used. When the invitation was delivered to your guest, it was removed from the outer envelope, which contained the guest’s address, and presented to them with just the inner envelope. Since the address was no longer needed, the inner envelope just contained the guest’s name. In keeping with tradition, some invitations are still mailed with double envelopes - the outer containing the guest’s name and address and the inner with just the name.

When using double envelopes, the return address goes on the outer envelope. The inner envelope includes the liner and remains unsealed.

When addressing invitations, the formal way to address your guests is by using their proper titles, followed by the address fully spelled out - no abbreviations.

Mr. and Mrs. John Smith

1234 Sample Street

City, State 05678

  • Children under the age of 18 can be listed on their parents invitation. Anyone over the age of 18 should receive their own invitation. When listing children on double envelopes, they should be listed on the inside envelope. When using single envelopes “and family” can be used.

Mr. and Mrs. John Smith and family

  • When addressing couples that are married but have different last names “and” can be used, and the woman is listed first.

Ms. Jane Johnson and Mr. John Smith

  • Couples that are not married should be listed on separate lines, with the woman listed first.

Ms. Jane Johnson

Mr. John Smith

  • When a guest is bringing a plus-one to the wedding, they are addressed as “and guest”.

Mr. John Smith and guest

When addressing medical doctors, judges, and military personnel, their proper titles should be used. For example,

When the man is a doctor: Doctor and Mrs. John Smith

When the woman is a doctor: Doctor Jane Smith and Mr. John Smith

When both are doctors: The Doctors Smith

Summer Wedding Inspiration

Take a peek at some of our favorite Summer weddings!

Brailey and Spencer went all blue with their Summertime wedding at The Milestone! Take a look at that gorgeous floral arch!

Emily and Dan celebrated their special day at DC’s Meridian House. Emily paid attention to every little detail of the day, from the acrylic signage with the perfect shade of pink, to design details including a linden leaf to match the linden trees in the garden.

Haley and Carey went with a modern feel while still keeping the western vibe of Hotel Drover in mind. We love that they were open to playing with color in the invitations, so we went with different color cards: sage, navy, and dusty rose!

Allison and Akeem came to us with the idea of a bright, colorful, wedding. We started with a custom watercolor crest, and everything fell into place from there! Our favorite moment: the couple’s love for juice was the inspiration behind their seating display!

Ellie and Connor had a classy, traditional, elegant wedding with a focus on giving their guests a luxe experience in Vail, Colorado. These gorgeous mountain vibes paired so well with the touches of blue the couple used throughout their big day!

Wedding Invitation Wording

Here is a guide to wording your invitations!

Have an etiquette question? Feel free to reach out!

Next is the inviting line, here are some of the most common options:

  • Request the honor of your presence

  • Request the pleasure of your company

  • Invite you to share in the celebration of marriage

Next up, the couple’s names!

The woman is always listed first. For same sex couples, names should be listed in alphabetical order.

If the bride's parents are hosting the wedding and her last name is listed above, there is no need to repeat it here. The bride's first and middle name should be listed. The groom's full name should be listed.

Reply Card

For a mail back reply card make sure to include:

  • Reply by date (4-6 weeks before the wedding)

  • “M” line

  • Accepts/Regrets options

  • Meal choices or a line for dietary restrictions

For online replies make sure to include:

  • Reply by date (4-6 weeks before the wedding)

  • Wedding website

Who is hosting the wedding?

If this is the parents, we can use either their formal titles, or a more casual listing of their names:

Mr. and Mrs. John Smith

or

Jane and John Smith

If the couple is hosting the wedding, we can use “Together with their families” or just start out with the couple’s names!

The Details

The ceremony date and time comes next. Remember to spell everything out, no abbreviations.

Following the date and time is the location. The location should be listed using its full title as well as the city and state. The address of the location is not necessary, unless it takes place at a residential home.

If the reception is at the same location as the ceremony, include something along the lines of “Reception to follow” or “Cocktails, dinner, and dancing to follow.”

Info Card

This is the perfect place to include any additional information, such as accommodations, transportation, attire, and the wedding website.

Accommodation information should be listed with hotel name, address, and phone number.

If other events are happening the wedding weekend (Welcome Party, Sunday Brunch) this card is where to include those party details!

We work closely with all of our couples to figure out the perfect wording for your invitation suite. Send us a message to get started!

Spring Wedding Inspiration

Take a peek at some of our favorite Spring weddings!

Michelle and Kole were one of the first couples to get married at Hotel Drover in Fort Worth. This stunning spring wedding featured shades of blue throughout the day. Our favorite detail is the sketch of the Fort Worth Stockyards on the invitation!

Lexi and Henry went with a boho vibe for their springtime wedding. All of the arch shaped details were so fun to create and we loved this sage green color Lexi chose for her bridesmaids dresses and some of the tabletop details!

It was a blush and blue color scheme for Emily and Anthony with a heavy focus on florals! We knew we wanted to keep a simple design on deckled edge paper for the invitation suite and then add interest in the details. The couple loved the idea of incorporating a sketch of their venue, The Olana, in the invitation suite but did not want it to be the main focus. Check out the wax seal for the perfect little detail!

The Linden Grove at Meridian House might just be the perfect reception setting! Danielle and Mike’s invitations featured shades of blue. The same color palette was used on their menus - a booklet style with a page for each delicious course!

Lauren + PJ's Colorful Fall Wedding

When creating the design for Lauren + PJ’s wedding invitations, we had a couple items we wanted to focus on: creating an invitation design that had some fall leaves that both created movement within the invitation and showed off the perfectly curated color palette, and a way to mix bold minimalist fonts with stylized scripted fonts.

The Design

We worked to get the perfect mix of florals and leaves to give that beginning of fall feel! Our main focus was creating the design to add dimension and bring movement to the invitation. The gold foil added shine to the invitations, and the additional cards carried the design through the suite. The envelope liners ended up being the perfect add-on item to pull the entire color scheme together!

The Fonts

We knew a mix of fonts would be the perfect way to draw the guest’s eye to the couple’s names. We worked to find the perfect bold font and then paired it with an elegant script - with a touch of gold!

The Extras

These menus were a fun addition to pull the look into the table setting. The guest’s names were added to the menus instead of using place cards and were colored coded based on meal choice!

Trending: Deckled Edge Paper

A popular trend lately in wedding stationery is deckled edge paper. Deckled edge paper is handmade and left with distressed edges instead of a clean cut. It creates a gorgeous vintage looking invitation. The beauty of the deckled edge is that each piece is unique, creating the ultimate custom look for your invites! Deckled edge paper can be digitally or letterpress printed.

Take a look at some of our favorite deckled edge pieces!

Annemarie + Bradley: Soft and Romantic Fall Wedding

Classy Garden | Formal | Romantic

Annemarie and Bradley had a formal, outdoor, garden wedding. The Dallas Arboretum was the perfect location for this beginning of fall event! With greenery being the main focus, they brought the boldness of the leaves into a beautiful pastel color palette that appreciates the softness of the beginning of a new season, and a new marriage!

Keeping it Simple

A simplistic design with an interesting flare…

While the design process started with appreciating simplicity, we worked to include some interest by playing with different fonts throughout the design. The layout was created to give the invitation a unique and romantic flare, while keeping the focus on the bride and groom’s names by mixing both block and script lettering. All eyes are going to be on them for their special day, so it’s extremely fitting that the invitation expressed it as well!

A Pop of Watercolor

Floral Fun

We added in a floral watercolor design for the lining of the envelope. This was a subtle way of incorporating a romantic look into the invitation suite! With the simplistic and formal aesthetic of the invitation, the envelope lining compliments it beautifully and adds a fun element to the overall look!

Day of Paper

Theme, Theme, Theme! This wedding look incorporated florals and a classy script font throughout each piece. From the welcome sign to the fans given to guests when they are seated, the wedding aesthetic remained consistent to create a complete look!

Creating a Cohesive Design

Carrying your invitation design through to your wedding day

When I first began designing wedding invitations, one of my customers mentioned that they wanted to create a “wedding brand”.  As I would when creating business branding items, we nailed down a color palette, perused fonts until we found the perfect ones, and created a logo with the couple’s initials and wedding date.

From there, every design choice we made starting with the save the dates and invitations, all the way to the custom cocktail napkins used the day of the wedding, were a perfect match to their wedding brand. We used their logo on the invitations, and again on their menus and programs. Each paper, ink, and ribbon color we selected was a perfect match to the color palette that we continued to reference. This brand design was a great checkpoint to make sure every detail of the wedding had a cohesive look.

Although taking the time to create a wedding brand is not necessary, with so many inspiration ideas available, it is nice to have a solid foundation to keep you focused on creating a cohesive wedding look! When working on the “day of” wedding items, such as seating charts, signage, table numbers, and place cards, refer back to your invitations. Use the same fonts, colors, and overall theme to continue your “wedding brand” that will leave your guests talking about your gorgeous day!

Carolina + Kyle came to us looking for an elegant winter wedding feel. They knew they wanted a green and gold color scheme, and we went from there! We used their initials in a wreath to create their wedding logo, which was then used again on their menus.

Although we wanted the invitation to be on a clean white card, we decided to play with color and use white ink on green stock for their other items! The green cards on the gold plates really popped, while still having a very formal feel. We used gold wax seals to create a seating chart on a large vintage mirror and added lots of greenery to really tie together the color scheme.

Stationery Timeline

Congratulations on your engagement! There are many moving pieces in the wedding planning process and we want to help you stay on track for ordering and mailing your wedding stationery! Begin by saving all of those dreamy photos you are seeing on Pinterest and Instagram to start building your design board. Once you have an idea of the overall look for your wedding, let’s chat!

8 Months Before the Wedding

Save the Dates

These cards are the perfect way to give your guests advance notice of your special day! At this time, you will want to get your save the dates designed and printed so that they can be in the mail 6-8 months in advance. If you are planning a destination wedding, let’s start this process sooner so your guests have more time to make travel arrangements!

6 Months Before the Wedding

Begin Designing Invitations

Now is the time to start working on your invitation suite! The invitation is the first impression for your guest and sets the tone for your wedding. In addition to the important information such as date, time, and location, the invitation should be a hint as to the overall vibe of the wedding. Are we rocking boots in a barn venue or wearing black tie at the country club?

At the 6-month mark, let’s start talking about the cards that should be included in the invitation suite, any additional add-on items you would like to include (envelope liners, wax seals, ribbon, etc.) and the overall design of your suite. We will create a digital proof and make any revisions necessary until we have the perfect look!

4 Months Before the Wedding

Finalize Invitations

Make any final edits to your invitation design proof and send to print! Overall printing time will vary depending on print method and how detailed your invitation design is, but you should plan for about 4-6 weeks of production time. Now is also the time to make plans on mailing details – would you like your envelopes to be addressed digitally or would you like to hire a hand calligrapher? Are you planning on using standard postage stamps or would you like vintage stamps curated to match your invitation design?

2 Months Before the Wedding

Mail Invitations and Order Day of Wedding Paper

Assemble, stamp, seal, and get those invites in the mail! Invitations should be mailed 8 weeks before the wedding. If you are having a destination wedding, plan on sending these closer to the 12-week mark to give your guests a little more time to plan.

Once the invitations are in the mail, make a list of the other stationery items you will need on your wedding day. These may include: programs, menus, seating charts, custom cocktail napkins, hotel welcome bags, bar signs, etc. Begin working on the design for these items now, that way when you have your final guest count, we are ready to send to print!

1 Month Before the Wedding

Final Details

At this point, you should have received your guest’s reply cards and have a final headcount for the wedding day. Move forward with finalizing and printing your Day of Wedding Paper and any last minute additions you may need.

At any point in the stationery process, make sure to add in an order for thank you notes! Etiquette states that you should send a thank you note within 2 months of receiving a gift.

We look forward to working with you!

It's All in the Details

The details are my favorite part of a design because they are small things that can make a big impact and a great way to add a personal touch! Imagine the excitement of getting the mail and seeing a bold envelope color with vintage postage stamps. I know that gets me pumped for whatever is inside that envelope! You go to open it and come across a gorgeous custom wax seal. Upon opening the envelope, your eye is drawn towards a stunning envelope liner pattern that you discover perfectly matches the invitation suite inside. Maybe all of the pieces are in a pocketfold, or held together by a ribbon or bellyband, it’s all of those small details that have come together to make this more than just a simple wedding invitation, but a personalized invite to a special event in your life.

So, when you are ready to begin working on your invitation design, absolutely take the time to focus on the different cards and the look of each, but don’t forget the small details too!

Get Connected!

The first step in the wedding invitation process is to narrow down an overall design aesthetic. This can be done by chatting with your stationer, browsing through their gallery, looking at physical samples of their work, and discussing with them the look and theme of your wedding. Once the invitation design comes together to show off your desired look, the details come to play!

Wax Seals:

Sealing wax comes in all different colors and the stamps can be made with any design. It can be a gorgeous floral, a custom monogram, or even your wedding date that we use on the seals! The perfect personalized touch, the wax seal can be used to close your envelope, hold together a ribbon, or just add a bit of color + dimension to your card.

Bellybands:

Whether it is made of paper or a luxurious ribbon, a band wrapped around the invitation will hold all of the cards together. Paper bands can be solid colors or printed with a pattern, or personalized details.

Envelopes:

Envelopes don’t need to be boring! Why not use this as a way to stand out and get your guests excited about your upcoming event. Colored envelopes are an easy way to get your invitation to pop in the mail. Postage stamps are a fun way to add a personal touch, whether it be stamps that match your interests and hobbies, or a location that has a significant impact in your relationship, there are so many really cool postage stamps options out there! Browse through the USPS website or look into vintage stamps through the years to find the perfect addition.

The last envelope step is to get a great envelope liner. This piece makes such a difference in the overall look of your invitations! Sometime a solid color is best, but I am a lover of the bold envelope liner pattern.

We are ready and excited to work with you to put all of these fun details together into the perfect wedding invitation suite design!
